What is a Urea breath test?
The urea breath test is a non-invasive, safe, painless and simple way to diagnose the current presence of H. pylori, a bacterium that can be found in the stomach.
H. Pylori is known to cause stomach ulcers and stomach cancer. It can cause symptoms such as bloating, pain in the stomach, heartburn and indigestion.
The test is performed either
- To confirm whether you are suffering from H. pylori infection, and to help diagnose your condition
- To ensure the eradication of the bacterium following treatment

How is the test performed?
The test takes approximately 45 minutes, as we are analysing four points, making it more accurate and comprehensive. You will be asked to breathe into balloon-like bags, which will then be analysed. No injections or invasive procedures are involved.
How do I prepare for the test?
- Do not smoke before the test.
- Fast for four (4) hours before the test – only water is allowed.
- If fasting is a concern (e.g. for diabetic patients), please contact our nurse for further advice.
- Avoid the following medications:
- Antibiotics and gastric medications – discontinue at least 28 days before the test.
- Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs) such as Esomeprazole, Omeprazole, Lansoprazole, Pantoprazole and Rabeprazole – discontinue 14 days before the test.
- Potassium-Competitive Acid Blockers (P-CABs) such as Vonoprazan and Tegoprazan – discontinue 14 days before the test.

What happens after the test?
- You may resume your usual activities and normal diet immediately after the test.
