It’s Just Gastric… Or Is It?

At a glance

In today’s fast-paced world of coffee for breakfast, late-night mamak runs, and stress-fuelled eating, it’s easy to brush off constant indigestion or stomach pain as “just gastric.” But what if it’s not?

Stomach cancer, also known as gastric cancer, is a type of cancer that begins in the stomach. It is often asymptomatic in its early stages but may later present with indigestion, stomach pain, nausea, and weight loss.

Key risk factors include infection with Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), smoking, a diet high in salted, smoked, or processed meats, a family history of stomach cancer, and being over the age of 50.

How is stomach cancer diagnosed?

  • Diagnosis is typically made through an upper endoscopy with biopsy to examine the stomach lining and check for cancer cells.

  • Other tests may include imaging scans such as CT, MRI, or PET scans.

Can stomach cancer be prevented?

While it cannot always be prevented, you can lower your risk of developing stomach cancer by:

  • Eating plenty of fruits and vegetables.

  • Reducing the intake of ultra-processed foods (UPFs).

  • Limiting cured meats, and salty and smoked foods.

  • Stopping smoking.

  • Treating Helicobacter pylori infection if present.

  • Undergoing stomach cancer screening if you have a strong family history of the disease.

Early detection matters

  • Consider gastric cancer screening with endoscopy for individuals aged over 40 with risk factors.

  • If detected before it spreads beyond the stomach, the chances of successful treatment and long-term survival are significantly higher.

Trust your gut!
So, the next time your stomach keeps acting up, don’t just ignore it or blame stress. Your gut might be warning you, and it’s worth listening. Consult a gastroenterologist to discuss further steps.
